Slightly More Than Less

New computer

I am getting the urge to get myself a new computer, nothing wrong with my current Toshiba laptop or in fact my previous Toshiba laptop. I just get to where I like to work with a new laptop and get me the next model up.

I seem to stick with toshiba computers, I like their reliability and how well they are made. My current one has a 17 inch screen I'd like to check and see if they have one with a bigger screen, especially as I watch movies via Netflix a lot on my laptop.

Switching the plates

I walked into our joint home office and the wife asked what I thought of her improvements. I had to hunt around and still couldn't see what she was talking about. No matter where I looked I could not for the life of me see anything different in the room.

Finally exasperated the wife took me by the hand to wall and pointed at the light switches. Suddenly it sunk in, she had changed out the boring white switchplates for some snazzy new switchplates with cool designs on them. Had to admit they did looked cool once I realized where I should be looking.

Of course it starts small but I am sure she will slowly increase changes to the office on a larger scale, before I know it the whole room will look totally different.

Well, for our fifteenth wedding anniversary we decided to renew out vows and have a big church wedding and lots of guests which I could see costing a fortune. But the wife has decided she'd rather go to Vegas and do it there, the Excalibur hotel and a Medieval themed wedding with very few guests.

Cheaper and to me much more fun all around. She also decided that for new wedding bands she likes the look of artcarved wedding bands, not sure which particular design she likes yet but I have to admit there are some pretty nice designs to choose from.

Junk drawer getting more junk

I like probably most guys have a junk drawer a catch-all for all the gadgets and stuff I have collected over the years and hope will be useful some day.

Flash drives, CD-R's, leads, eye glass repair kits, ,hone cases, pocket knives, batteries, remote controls and all manner of stuff. Lately though I have noticed Beads, marbles, candy wrappers, pieces of stings, bits of paper with scribbles and doodles on them, crayons sticky candies and doll action figure accessories.

I am guessing one or more of the grand kids have been going places they shouldn't and depositing their junk in grandpa's junk drawer.

Methinks it is time to have a talk to the young ruffians, depositing their junk with my junk, grandma may come along and see their junk and throw away the contents of the drawer thinking it is all junk! Cannot have that, the universe couldn't handle it.

A day for visitors

It appears today is the day for visitors, apart from Herbert and his twin brother, I also got visits from Bob, a high school friend, who I hadn't seen in years, Kristen popped in, she is a personal training richmond. She of course gets on me about looking after myself and says if I am in Richmond I have to visit her at her club for some personal training. I told her not to hold her breath on that one!

I also got a visit from my old pal Charles, or Chuck to his friend. Chuck is an eccentric inventor who is always coming up with crazy ideas and schemes. He is into anything steam punk and loves nothing more than to be building something modern into a steam punkish looking object.

I am wondering who else is going to turn up.

While Herbert was over at our place there was a knock at the door. I opened it and got a shock, it was Herbert, or I thought it was Herbert, turns out it was Robert, Herbert's twin brother. Certainly less spotty and dressed more smartly.

Turns out his a raleigh business lawyer, which would explain his smarter appearance. Kind of weird having twins in the house I was amazed how alike they were. Herbert had never mentioned he had a twin brother.

Herbert welds

While Herbert was over he mentioned that he used to be a welder and that he still has welding equipment in his garage. I was surprised as I didn't think he did anything like that. He asked if I had any projects he could use his welding equipment on, I told him that I hadn't anything that needs welding.

He mentioned a wrought iron railing or something around our deck but I told him I didn't want anything like that but I would let him know if I hear of anyone who may require his welding skills.

Spotty Herbert not so spotty

Spotty Herbert came over and I immediately noticed he is getting less spotty and looking really buff. Being in a relationship obviously suits him and he is taking better care of himself. Ms. Bubbly obviously is a great influence on Herbert.

He also talks less about diet schemes and get-rich-quick schemes. In fact all he seems to talk about is Ms. Bubbly, he asked if I would be his best man at their upcoming wedding, I said I would be honored to be his best man.

Wife and I got the grand kids a lot of gifts this year for Christmas and decided we would get each other gifts later. I still haven't decided on what I want yet, compiling a long list.

The wife told me she wanted a bracelet, a Boccia titanium bracelet in particular.She saw one and fell in love with it and wants one or two. I was expected very high prices but when i checked them out they are pretty reasonable so I think I shall get her one or two. Gives me an idea for her birthday too.

I was noticing several pairs of eye glasses laying around the living room, hadn't seen them before and wondered if we had quests, maybe the wife had a women's party going on. But I couldn't find anyone, except the wife in the office.

I asked her about the glasses and she told me she had decided she needed new reading glasses as she was getting fed up of her old ones.

"Why so many pairs?" I asked her.

She decided several different styles of designer reading glasses would be good so she can chop and change them as she got fed up with the look of a pair.

I do a similar things with watches, I rarely buy new batteries when one runs out, I usually just get a new watch. I get fed up looking at the same watch after a time.

I was clearing out the den and various closets and found tons of boxes. Full of paper, receipts, documents and various paper items. Wasn't aware we had accumulated so much paper crap! We need the space so I need to organize all these papers, better yet I need to source a good document imaging solution so I can scan and digitize everything and get rid of all the paper.

Handy for business cards and anything else I need copies of, think I should also get a good external hard drive for backing-up all these new digitized files to.

A cigar for the gentleman

A few friends always get together and have a few drinks and shoot the breeze at the holidays. No spouses, kids or grand kids, just the the guys drinking and having a few laughs. We all usually each bring a bottle of expensive booze, a few boxes of cao cigars and some stories of what we've been up to the past year.

The wives are happy to allow this one treat and let us guys have fun, meanwhile they're usually out together shopping and having fun themselves.

Although I notice each year the stories get duller, we smoke fewer cigars and certainly drink less. Must be that old age creeping up on us!

Visiting grand kids

We spent some time visiting our grand kids for the holidays, and has a good time and we spoilt them rotten with gifts. One grand son spent a while bemoaning how he never wins anything sports related, I did try and tell him that he needs to apply himself and actually try hard to win whatever sport he partakes in.

He seems to think he should win without actually trying, I was looking at QuickTrophy.com plaques with a view to maybe getting him a few plaques and trophies to present to him when he does something. That way hopefully he gets the idea that when he applies himself and makes the effort he can win something or get awards.

You have to make the effort to attain achievements.

I got invited to a party by someone I don't know all that well, wasn't going to bother but wife is out of town and I was bored. Shouldn't have bothered, I knew no one and as soon as I walked in I got the impression everyone had started drinking hours ahead of me.

People were staggering around, being rowdy and making fools of themselves. I thought it was some opiate detox center reunion. Most people appeared to be under the influence of not only alcohol but other substances too.

I used to enjoy this type of party in my youth but now it just became annoying to me.

Music was way too loud as well, or maybe I'm just becoming an old miserable codger!

Restaurants

Been watching Food Network and a lot of the Restaurant Impossible with chef Robert Irvin. Interesting to see how hostile some restaurant owners get until they see how chef can really help them turn their place around. Makes me wonder how a lot of these people find restaurant loans to fund their places, especially when quite a few have no idea how to run a business and next to no experience running a restaurant.

I'd like to see a review program that follows up after the show to see how the restaurants are really doing once they have been featured on the make-over show.

Mystery box

Sitting in the kitchen snacking on a sandwich and beer I noticed a cardboard box tucked under the dining room table. Crawling on my hands and knees I reached under and retrieved the box. There was a photo on the box of some boots and the label telling me they were mens dress boots.

I cannot say that I wear mens dress boots but the photo looked kind of cool and I think I would wear these on occasion with with some nice pants.

I then wondered if I had discovered one of the wife's Christmas presents for me, she certainly did a poor job of hiding them. I was going to put the box back under the table but decided to take a peek first.

Unfortunately the box contained Christmas decorations, colored glass balls for the tree to be exact. Darn!

This of course begs the question, where did the wife get the mens dress boots box from and who got the boots that were in the box?

I have noticed a large pile of cardboard boxes has been slowly piling up in our front room, try as I might I couldn't ignore them any longer and checked them out. Turns out they were the boxes of Christmas decorations from storage.

Looks like the wife has been slowly fetching them from storage and bringing them in, something she usually gets me to do. But I guess she is fed up of my procrastinating and decided the task would get done quicker if she just did it herself.

Guess I'd better offering my assistance in putting up the decorations before she asks!

Big man

I was pottering around in the yard and I noticed a guy ambling up the driveway to the front of the house. He was big, by big, I mean wide, he had huge wide shoulders, he was wearing a sharp suit and dark sunglasses. My first thought was gangster, then a medical malpractice insurance ohio lawyer. He had a lawyers look to him but also an aura of being able to handle himself.

Think well dressed wrestler! Wasn't sure if he would serve a summons or your head on a platter. I walked around and intercepted him before he got to the front door, all the while wondering if I had done something wrong..

Turns out he wasn't some kind of lawyer or gangster but from a local church looking for donations. We chatted for a while and he was very amiable. I ended up donating some money to the church roof restoration fund!

Oops need new shirts

When I came home the wife tarted to give me a hard time, apparently before leaving the house this morning I did some laundry. Unfortunately I washed and dried the clothes on too hot a setting and shrunk a bunch of t-shirts. Wife ranted and raved for a while until I pointed out that I only shrunk my own t-shirts as I was only washing my own clothes. I know better than to wash her delicate items.

Guess I am going shopping for a bunch of new t-shirts! Of course the wife thinks I did it on purpose so I could get some new shirts but I assured it that wasn't the case as I hate clothes shopping. Least the kids know what to get me for Christmas now.

Wildlife

As part of the work we did in Spotty Herbert's yard we made fitting to fit trail cameras up at the back near the wooded area. Herbert reckons he gets wild deer, Oppossums, Raccoons and even bears hanging around out there. He wanted to put some various trail cameras up in an effort to get some photos of the wildlife.

Be pretty cool if he does get some pictures of the wild animals he thinks come into his yard. Some of the trail cameras have flash and other are night vision, so we may get some cool images if we are lucky.

Helping Spotty Herbert

Neighbor Spotty Herbert asked for my help with his yard, I was expecting a bit of sweeping and maybe some weeding. But he had a crap ton of projects to get done, he wanted to build a big shed to house their motorcycles and a huge Koi pond. He had a back hoe, skidsteer loader, a whole plethora of equipment, you'd think he was building a full-size landing strip he had so much gear.

I helped most of the day which wasn't my original plan for my day off, but we accomplished quite a bit but I ended the day feeling like I'd been run over by a Mack truck.

We made the pond but the motorcycle shed proved a bit too much work for one day, I think I'll be busy on the day he wants to finish it!

I need a haircut

Woke up this morning and took a look in the mirror, looked pretty wrecked, my hair was all over the place. Sticking out every which way, looked like I had been dragged through a hedge backwards. Going through one of my wanting to grow my hair long but unfortunately it gets unruly and annoying and I usually end up cutting it really short.

Being short it takes less maintenance in the morning which is a good thing.

I have decided I need to get with the times and join the electronic book band wagon. I have Kindle for PC and occasionally read books online. But I thought maybe it is time to look into ereaders, a Kindle or Nook for instance.

I have to get into the habit of using ereaders, sitting on the bus etc. reading a book electronically. I am still liking the feel of an actual book in my hands. Sometimes I like sitting in bed reading and having it help me drift off to sleep, at least with a book it can slide to the floor with no problems, whereas not so much with an ereader.

I also wonder which is worse on the eye sight, text on paper or electronic text.

One less finger!

I was rooting around in my tool box, looking for my favorite screwdriver, suddenly I felt a sharp pain and swore and pulled my hand out. My finger had a nice deep gash in the end and I was squirting blood everywhere.

The wife came running after hearing me swearing and dragged be to the bathroom and washed and bandaged my finger, I asked her if she had been messing with my toolbox. Because the utility knife I cut myself on was in the wrong section. She eventually owned up to using my tools and said she didn't realize each tool had its own place in the toolbox.

I think I need to get a better quality safer utility knife and replace my old dangerous ones that I have had for ages.

The wife came home threw me a bottle of cream, it was seaweed cream, I asked why on earth I would need seaweed cream for. She told me it may help with my dry rough elbows and bottoms of my feet. Apparently my rough elbows rub her something chronic during the night and she wants to try and make it better.

Guess I should give it a go seeing as she made the effort and got the cream for me. Although I'm not keen on the peppermint scent of the cream she got me but I'll put up with it for the wife.

Allergy season

Each year I seem to get more and more affected by allergies, drives me nuts all clogged up and snotty. I've tried all manner of meds and cures but never seem to get any better. Probably a good idea to go to the doctors and get tested to see what allergens I am allergic too.

Laundry time

When I got home from work the wife went ballistic as I sat on our new couch and when I got up there was grease stains left behind.

Had to rack my brain as to where it could've come from. Then I remembered the machine issues we had at work, facilities had parts all over the place industrial bearings strewn everywhere, nuts, bolts and other doodads underfoot and on almost every surface.

No wonder I got grease or oil on my clothes, someone is due a dressing down, heaven help them if the wife gets a hold of them.

Don't know if anyone has any good ideas for removing grease from furniture, sure would appreciate it!

Hard day

Today has been hectic and tiring, seems today was the day all the machinery decided to crap out and break down. I assumed it was an electrical issue for all the machines to have problems on the same day.

Facilities bods had crap all over the place in their effort to get our machines back up and running, which they did eventually. But it was tiring as we then had to work at getting caught up again on the work that was delayed due to the machine issues.

Musician in my dreams

One of my dreams has always to be a musician, I have hankered to be able to play and perform in front of a big crowd. I can picture myself playing a Fender Bass, although I have to admit that I am not very good at playing the bass, I don't have the patience to practice every day that I would need to be good enough to perform.

I try to practice regularly but I get fed up of the numb fingers and stop and lose the progress I made. One of these days I'll pick up the Fender Bass and apply myself and get better. Then again, one day maybe I'll stop being a procrastinator!

Wrong address

I've been waiting for a few packages and when I came home I found a parcel on my doorstep, I carried it in and ripped it open and found it contained a few packages of adult diapers. Now I'm not yet in need of an adult diaper and didn't order any so was a bit miffed why I got them. I then checked the address label and realized they should've been delivered to an elderly neighbor around the corner.

I carried the parcel around to the neighbor and the old guy was totally embarrassed to the point of tears. I apologized for opening the parcel and explained that he needn't be embarrassed, it is something that comes to most of us eventually. He invited me in for a cup of coffee and we had a good chat. In the end I think he was okay, he had only just started wearing adult diapers.

I explained my parents have to use them so I am used to seeing them around.

Spotty Herbert came around today and showed me his new tattoo he had just gotten. It was of a red heart surrounded by roses and a scroll with Ms. Bubbly's name in it. I was surprised, I told him I hope the relationship lasts as a tattoo is for life. I know you can get tattoos covered up by larger tattoos and removed by laser, but still, to have someone's name tattooed on you can be tempting fate.

We'll see how it turns out.

Document imaging

At work we have interns and other office worker bees scurrying around emptying out filing cabinets, drawers and boxes of documents. There is a concerted effort to go paperless and get all documents scanned and stored digitally. All archives and backfiles are getting scanned so we can release the space they are taking up for other stuff. Royal Imaging document imaging are working overtime to keep up with the steady stream of paper we are sending them.

Be interesting to see once the work is all done how easy it is to retrieve scanned documents and to get all new documents quickly scanned into the system. Definitely interesting to see how paperless we can actually be, save a crap ton of trees hopefully.

A baby is getting christened

I came into the home office the wife and I share and found her at the desk hunched over the keyboard working on one of her designs. A neighbor is having her daughter christened and she wanted my wife to design and print the Christening Invitations. The wife had paper strewn all over and the printer was virtually smoking it was working so hard.

The wife does these designs for people for free and just charges them cost for the supplies used. I keep telling her she should charge for the work she puts onto each project, but she says then, she would not enjoy it as much if it became a"job".

I was looking around for Halloween costume ideas and thought about a cool gas mask. I checked the King of Swords site and they have a couple of cool masks, either one would be a great base for a costume. I need to find out if these will take a paint job for further customization.

Saw something I thought was funny, when in fact it was far from funny in anyway, especially for the person involved. Guess I'm twisted like that at times.

Saw a teenager with emo hair and baggy pants ambling along the sidewalk, he had ear buds in and was listening to his tunes in a world of his own devoid of any awareness of his surroundings. He crossed a road and nearly got run down because he didn't hear the horn of the car that had to stop suddenly to avoid hitting him. The horn alerted my attention to this guy and I watched as he continued down the street.

A couple of teenage girls walked from the opposite direction, as they passed the emo dude he was suddenly paying attention and turned and watched them walking away as he continued walking.

I could see what was coming but didn't call out as he wouldn't have heard me anyway. He walked straight into a small signpost with a resounding bang! It was as if he had run full tilt into a steel building and he crashed backwards to the floor dazed.

I stifled a laugh and was getting set to go over and check on him, but he got up, shook his head then continued on his merry way.

I walked away laughing.

I know, my bad!

I came in and the wife was unaware I was home, I heard in another room talking, I gathered she was talking to her good friend. Try as I might I didn't want to eavesdrop but I heard my wife mention something about wedding anniversary gifts for husband, husband being me.

She was trying to get ideas for gifts to get me for when we renew our wedding vows for our 15th wedding anniversary.

I hadn't even thought of getting gifts, so I haven't thought of anything I could possibly want, have most everything I need. Have to have a look around and see if I find something I might like. Hopefully not cuff links again, I don't have a shirt that takes cuff links.

Marketing guys

We had a presentation today from our marketing guys, kudos to them for supplying free donuts and coffee which got us to go and see their Table top displays. We weren't really interested as the marketing guys are a different breed and all "hoo-rah" and gung-ho types which I guess they have to be. They seem to always have some sort of pep talk and motivational speakers coming to see them. Selling for a living and relying on commissions must be hard at times, especially in these hard financial times.But I guess what they sells keeps us other department going, so we graced them with our presence and scarfed their goodies.

Documents everywhere

The young IT guys are driving us crazy at work, they want to implement a new document management system and I guess we are resisting it as much as possible. We keep saying we are used to our piles of documents strewn all around the office and labs. Driving them nuts as they are seemingly banging their heads against the wall.

They haven't cottoned on that we know we need the new system but we are just giving them a hard time for their continually looking down their noses at us old geezers.

We'll get them in line and around to our way of thinking soon, they need to know we aren't total diehard Luddites!

One thing I find really irksome is when people assume you don't know something. We have a young IT guy who looks at us old geezers in the office and thinks we don't know anything. Young bloody whipper snapper, us old guys have been using computers longer than this dude has been alive.

Nearly knocked out

Earlier I was walking through the parking lot, daydreaming minding my own business and I walked behind the neighbor's SUV. Something I have done many times before, but this time I nearly knocked myself unconscious. Took me a second to realize why I nearly hit my head when I hadn't come close to doing so before. The neighbor's suv had been fitted with a new suv bike rack on the back.

Guess their decision to start mountain bicycling has started in earnest, they had mentioned it a while ago but only now have they seemingly gotten around to getting it done. I am just thankful there were no bicycles actually on the rack at the time I walked behind the truck, I would've really knocked myself out!
